Energy supplier switching in Great Britain maintained its pace in January 2024 with another month of results far outstripping the same time last year.

There were 207,000 changes of supplier (CoS) last month – three percent more than the month before and 76 percent more than the 117,000 CoS in January 2023.

The six-month moving average has increased from just above 100,000 switches per month in January 2023 to over 220,000 switches per month this January.

In terms of switching types, switches between Large suppliers decreased while all other types increased, particularly the number of Other suppliers gaining customers from Large brands. This accounts for most of the increase in the total CoS for January. CoS between Other suppliers increased by over a quarter but still has a very low base size.

  • Large to Large switches reached 124,000 – three percent less than December 2023 and 60 percent of January 2024’s total CoS completed,
  • Large to Other switches totalled 44,000 – 16 percent more than December 2023 and 21 percent of January 2024’s total CoS completed,
  • Other to Large switches reached 26,000 – two percent more than December 2023 and 13 percent of January 2024’s total CoS completed,
  • And Other to Other switches landed at 13,000 – 27 percent more than December 2023 and six percent of January 2024’s total CoS completed.

The above figures relate to electricity CoS in Great Britain only.

We do not include CoS from SoLR processes or trade sales in our monthly CoS reporting. We account for only voluntary switches, or instances where the customer made an active decision and took action to change supplier, including after a contract expired.
