The GB smart meter installation programme started the year at a healthy pace after an expected decline in installation activity over the festive season.
There were 183,000 smart meter installations in January – just shy of the 185,000 installs in January 2022 but 17 per cent more than December 2022.
Almost 2.4mn smart meter installs were recorded in 2022. Including January 2023, the average number of monthly installs is 197,000 over the past 12 months.
There have now been 19.854mn smart meter installations across GB since the rollout began.
The typical regional installations league table persisted in January. East England recorded 24,000 installs, Southern England recorded 21,000 and the East Midlands recorded 17,000.

NOTES:
These figures represent electricity smart meter installations in GB. Visit the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy’s website for the latest dual fuel smart meter reports.
The analysis is based on the D0150 data flows transmitted across our network and we believe capture the vast majority of electricity smart installs.
The users of the DTS have given ElectraLink permission to intercept and analyse this, and other data flows, subject to certain conditions.
Our analysis defines smart meters as those models with the capability to handle time of use tariffs and which can be remotely updated.
For installations after September 2013, we count all meters flagged as SMETS1, SMETS2 or non-SMETS. For installations before the industry standard designation was agreed, the allocation is based on the make and model of meter.
