The smart meter rollout hit a small snag as August ended a five-month run of over 200,000 installations per month.

There were 189,000 smart meter installations last month – three percent more than August 2020 but almost 16 percent less than July 2021.

March to July 2021 all recorded over 200,000 installations per month as the UK emerged from Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

There have been over 1.6 million installations so far this year, and over 16.3 million since the rollout began in 2012.

Regional distribution of smart meter installs remained largely the same in August. East England recorded 26,000 installs, 21,000 in Southern England and 18,000 in the East Midlands. South Scotland became the ninth region to pass 1 million cumulative installations.

These figures represent electricity smart meter installations in GB.

The analysis is based on the D0150 data flows transmitted across our network and we believe capture the vast majority of electricity smart meter installs.

The users of the DTS have given ElectraLink permission to intercept and analyse this, and other data flows, subject to certain conditions.

Our analysis defines smart meters as those models with the capability to handle time of use tariffs and which can be remotely updated.

For installations after September 2013, we count all meters flagged as SMETS1, SMETS2 or non-SMETS. For installations before the industry standard designation was agreed, the allocation is based on the make and model of meter.
