Data Transfer Service
In the late 1990’s, the UK electricity market underwent significant change, culminating in 1998 with the introduction of competition in the supply of electricity to the domestic market for the very first time.
This meant that competing companies were required to work together in order to interchange information about domestic customers. The key to the success of this arrangement would be the agreement of a common set of data interchange requirements and the deployment of a centralised interoperability service. The licence obligation to build this service was passed to the DNOs which formed ElectraLink to procure and manage the DTS.
All UK electricity suppliers use the DTS in support of business critical processes, such as settlement, change of supplier and metering.
ElectraLink successfully re-procured the service in 2002/03 on behalf of the industry, securing an annual cost saving of £8 million.
Users enjoy all the benefits of the most modern networking technologies, including the latest web based services.
Every year, the service processes approximately 20 million files and successfully delivers over 575 Gigabytes of data.
ElectraLink’s ongoing investment in the underlying infrastructure ensures that the service is ready to underpin new business requirements whilst meeting all our customers’ needs.
